Coaching & Professional Growth

Reframing Growth across the Sector: From Proving to Improving

For too long, professional development across the education sector has been trapped in rigid hierarchies, performance compliance, and top-down evaluation.

The Inclusive Education Leadership Framework (IELF) offers a different path: shifting professional dialogue away from daily operational “tick-box metrics” and toward genuine, sustainable development for every member of staff.

Grounded in Pure Accountability and adult-to-adult coaching relationships, the IELF provides a universal, non-judgmental language for growth. It enables schools and trusts to:

1

Demystify Leadership & Empower All Staff

Break open the “SLT suite” so that every professional—from classroom support and Estates to finance and executive directors—recognises their daily sphere of influence.

2

Balance High Expectations with High Care

Maintain unwavering standards for our pupils and communities through constructive challenge, holding high expectations as the ultimate form of professional care.

3

Focus on "Improving," Not "Proving"

Replace punitive systems with developmental check-ins that build psychological safety, self-directed agency, and intrinsic responsibility.

4

Navigate the Triple Focus of Awareness

Challenge colleagues to balance their Inner Focus (self-awareness), Other Focus (team psychological safety), and Outer Focus (systemic community impact).

Deep Dive: How We Do It at Inspire Partnership

“At its heart, Pure Accountability is about intrinsic responsibility: a culture where trustees, leaders, teachers and support staff act in the best interests of children, not because they are compelled by external pressure, but because they are committed to a shared moral endeavour and vision.”
— Michael Pain / Forum Strategy

While the IELF is designed as an open-access resource for the wider sector, we have embedded its principles deeply into the daily culture across our partnership. We transformed traditional appraisal into Professional Growth Conversations (PGCs), establishing a culture where high expectations, continuous coaching, and collective action go hand in hand.

In this reflective piece, Aimi Vdovin (School Improvement Lead at the Inspire Partnership) shares her insights on why professional growth must extend across all roles.

Drawing on personal reflections from across her career, she explores how relational coaching, high expectations as a form of care, cross-role working parties, and “pure accountability” create a thriving culture where every member of staff is supported to step forward and succeed.

Top-down, test-driven accountability, without investments in building capacity, is not a strategy for sustained improvement. It can lead to a climate of fear and compliance, which stifles innovation.
